Mental Health Awareness Week May 7-13: Mental Health for All
Mental Health Week is an annual national event that takes place during the first week in May. This week, spearheaded by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) encourages people from all walks of life to learn, talk, reflect and engage with others on all issues relating to
mental health. This year’s theme, Mental Health for All, represents the right of every Canadian to enjoy and have the best
possible mental health.
Raising awareness about mental health is crucial. One in five Canadians will be affected by mental illness in their lifetime,
but discrimination and stigma prevent many people from seeking treatment. Mental illness does not discriminate; it cuts across
all age, racial, religious, and socio-economic categories. This means that nearly every family in Canada will be touched bymental
illness.
To help bring about a better understanding of mental illness and addiction during Mental Health Week, CAMH has partnered with
TVO to produce Mental Health Matters, featuring television programming, extensive online resources and special in-the-community broadcast events to inspire informed conversation
on an issue that affects us all.
Starting today, tune in to TVO’s The Agenda every evening at 8 p.m. to watch CAMH experts discuss issues surrounding mental health.
