Abuse and advocacy resources: CrossCurrents Winter 2002/03

The following are useful resources about women's mental health issues, sexual abuse and mental health advocacy:

  • The Klinic Community Health Centre (www.klinic.mb.ca) is a Winnipeg-based charitable organization. Among the services it offers are a 24-hour sexual assault crisis line and group counselling for people who have experienced sexual abuse. The crisis line can be reached toll-free in Manitoba at 1 888 292-7565 and in Winnipeg at (204) 786-8631.
  • The Manitoba Schizophrenia Society (www.mss.mb.ca) is a non-profit, community-based mental health organiza 0tion with offices across the province. In addition to its self-help groups, the Society runs a support program designed for its women clients, and is a prominent advocate on policy development for mental health initiatives in Manitoba.
  • www.shelternet.ca is an on-line resource, offering contact information for women's shelters across Canada.
  • CAMH's Women's Program serves women who have a history of trauma in combination with a mental illness. The program includes the Women's Inpatient Unit, which provides assessment, diagnosis, treatment and community linkages. For more information call 416 535-8501, ext. 4629 or 4119.
