Asking the Right Questions 2: Talking with Clients about Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Asking the Right Questions 2: Talking with Clients about Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

This course is provided by the Office of Health Equity.

Description:

This interactive course prepares health care providers with knowledge and skills to best assess and support the specific needs of clients from minority sexual orientations and gender identities.

Substance use and mental health concerns may be related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity issues, particularly those aspects linked to stigma, isolation and, in some cases, harassment and discrimination.  Often, LGBTTTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, two-spirited, intersex, queer) people are not comfortable coming out about their gender and sexual identities when accessing services.  Clinicians may be uncomfortable asking questions that would help clients to disclose such information.   As a result, these clients are often poorly served, with adverse health consequences.

Who should attend: nurses, physicians, therapists, intake and/or assessment workers, and other health care and allied professionals with some openness to LGBTTTIQ issues, seeking to support and increase awareness and skills

Learning objectives:

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • identify the importance of sexual orientation and gender identity in the assessment process
  • explain the unique concerns of LGBTTTIQ clients
  • engage LGBTTTIQ clients in a positive treatment process
  • identify LGBTTTIQ terms and concepts to enhance cultural competency
