Legal Issues in Mental Health in Ontario Online Course
Course Session Begins: April 16 - June 15, 2012
Description
This seven-week course provides an understanding of key legal issues in mental health and addiction care in Ontario, in the
context of clinical, ethical. organizational and systemic factors. Health care practitioners must be constantly mindful of
their legal obligations-including admission, treatment, discharge and health records-in order to respond effectively to clients'
rights and empower them to make their own health care decisions.
The course covers the following areas:
- mental health care in a multi-dimensional context
- legislation governing mental health care in Ontario
- admission to a psychiatric facility
- treatment in a psychiatric facility
- the Ontario Consent and Capacity Board
- discharge and community treatment orders
- privacy, confidentiality and the duty to warn/report.
