Alcohol on the brain

Do brain responses to alcohol differ in people who are susceptible to alcohol use disorders?

[Answer]

These functional MRI scans show the effects of alcohol on resting brain blood flow in young adults. Alcohol was administered intravenously using an “alcohol clamp,” which provides a highly controlled way to study alcohol’s effects on the brain. Images were taken at different levels of alcohol exposure in the brain, using a placebo-controlled design.

Study participants were also classified on their sensitivity to alcohol, with a commonly used questionnaire. Those with low sensitivity to alcohol, based on this questionnaire, are more likely to develop alcohol use disorders in the future. This research showed that alcohol-induced increases in blood flow, across several brain regions, were diminished among those with lower alcohol sensitivity.
