Virtual treatment

Can virtual reality help treat motivation problems in people with schizophrenia?
[Answer]
No effective therapies exist to address motivation problems, a common symptom of schizophrenia. Once a person’s psychosis is managed, low motivation can hinder a full recovery and affect functioning in school, work and the community.
This virtual reality (VR) environment provides a platform to study motivational training as a possible therapy. The study design involves adults with schizophrenia attempting real-world tasks, which become progressively more difficult over eight weeks. A comprehensive set of assessments, including a functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, will show if VR rehabilitation leads to improvements in motivation.
