Drug risks

How risky are drugs relative to each other?
[Answer]
Ranking drugs according to their health risks is helpful to plan risk minimization strategies.
This bar graph shows a new approach to ranking drug risks, called the Margin of Exposure (MOE). The ranking is calculated based on the known dose of a drug that causes a negative effect—the benchmark dose—and the estimated average amount a person would ingest.
For individual exposure, the higher risk drugs are alcohol, heroin, cocaine and nicotine. Least risky is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the active component in cannabis.
