Can we predict how a schizophrenia medication affects memory as it breaks down in the body?

[Answer]

Impaired working memory is a potential side-effect of clozapine, a medication used to treat schizophrenia. However, when clozapine is processed in the body, its major by-product, called N-desmethylclozapine (NDMC), can offset this side-effect.

This scatter plot shows this relationship. The bottom axis shows the ratio of clozapine to NDMC, as measured in blood plasma. Along the side are patients’ performance scores on memory tasks. The less clozapine to NDMC, the better the score. The finding suggests that manipulating the clozapine-to-NDMC ratio could enhance cognition in patients with schizophrenia treated with clozapine.
