Can photography be used as a research tool to engage community members?

[Answer]

Using PhotoVoice methodology, members from Kettle & Stony Point First Nation were asked to take photos that reflected their health, and to provide a narrative for their image. Photos were then collaboratively interpreted to spur dialogue and critical reflection.

The goal was to influence development of health programs and policy within the community. As the photographer of this image wrote:

“I remember I felt confident on the day I had my friend take this picture of me. I don’t have to be stuck in dark alleys any more. I can come out into the light.”
