Parenting profiles

Which parents are most likely to participate in treatment for their children’s disruptive behaviour problems?
[Answer]
Specialized training programs for parents of children with disruptive behaviours have been shown to work for many parents, but not all choose to participate in them.
This line graph shows three profiles of parents, based on their readiness to engage in treatment, and how they rated their parenting skills. These “readiness” profiles were compared to parents’ reports of their children’s behaviour problems, and used to predict who would participate in evidence-based parent management training.
Parents who showed the most “readiness” reported that their children had more disruptive behaviour, and participated in more treatment sessions. Results suggest that parent profiles should be considered clinically to maximize the benefits of treatment.
