How does cannabis use affect driving performance?
[Answer]
Almost one in 10 young Ontario adults reports using cannabis before driving. And studies show the risk of fatal collisions is greater for drivers under the influence of cannabis. When cannabis is combined with alcohol use, the risk is even higher.
The driving simulator provides a way to study the effects of cannabis on driving skills of young adults. Early results from this research suggest that, immediately after using cannabis, drivers reduced their speed and tended to deviate from lanes.
Ongoing research is looking at “hangover” effects of cannabis use on driving 24 hours later, and the combined effects of alcohol and cannabis on driving.
